Jim is a Certified Public Accountant licensed in Massachusetts, and has over 25 years of governmental accounting and auditing experience. He is the partner in charge of the governmental audit practice. In this role he develops the firm standards for governmental auditing and reporting.
Jim authored the Massachusetts Department of Revenue’s publication “A Practical Guide for Implementation of GASB Statement 34 for Massachusetts Local Governments” in 2001. He is an active speaker at governmental conferences sponsored by the Massachusetts Society of Certified Public Accountants, Department of Revenue, Government Finance Officers Association, Association of Government Accountants, Massachusetts Municipal Accountants and Auditors Association, Massachusetts Association of Treasurers and Collectors Association, Massachusetts Municipal Association of Finance Committee Members, Massachusetts Association of School Business Officials, Massachusetts Library Association and other organizations.
He serves on the Massachusetts Society of Certified Public Accountants Governmental Accounting and Auditing Committee. Mr. Powers is a member of the GFOA's Special Review Committee. In this capacity, he is responsible for determining if CAFR's submitted to the GFOA are either awarded or denied the Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting.
Jim received his B.S. Degree in Accounting from the University of Massachusetts, Lowell
Jim holds memberships in the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA), the Massachusetts Society of Certified Public Accountants, and the Government Finance Officers' Association.
Jim coaches his two daughters and two son’s basketball, soccer and baseball teams. He and his wife, Tara, enjoy entertaining friends and family in the backyard and vacationing with the kids. His favorite activities are golf and skiing.
